Time to stan Matthew Sweeny, this guy’s a straight-up pioneer in the drone world. Born in Australia but now an American tech entrepreneur, he’s the kind of dude who jumped into the game early and crushed it. His story is all about chasing weird ideas and turning them into real shit.

So, here’s the deal, Matthew studied international relations and philosophy at the University of Sydney. First in his fam to hit college, right? But what really lit him up was when he was over in Shanghai studying economics. That’s where he got hooked on drones. No bullshit, he was in his dorm building prototypes of delivery drones just for kicks. That’s some advanced passion.

Fast forward, in 2013, he co-founded Flirtey with Ahmed Haider and Tom Bass. Think about it, these guys launched what’s recognized as the world’s first drone delivery service. Not some prototype, but legit commercial drone deliveries. Then in 2014, they moved the company to Reno, Nevada, and started working with the FAA, getting drone tests approved, doing industry firsts like the first FAA-approved drone delivery in the US in 2015, and even delivering fully autonomous drones to people’s homes. That’s some sci-fi shit, but Matthew made it real.

And it wasn’t just about tech for tech’s sake. They partnered with NASA, Johns Hopkins, 7-Eleven, Domino’s, huge names, showing how serious they were. The drone even got into the Smithsonian. That’s the kind of stuff normal startups dream about. And Sweeny got recognized, YC Summer 2015, CNBC Disruptor 50 in 2018, dude was on fire.
