Can't sleep on Dan Chi
Meet the absolute unit that is Dan Chi, this guy’s the real deal. He’s a YC S18 alum, CTO and co-founder of Four Growers, and honestly one of the coolest tech dudes I’ve come across. His story? It’s all about jumping into stuff headfirst and building from scratch.
So, Dan’s from Pittsburgh, went to the University of Pittsburgh where he crushed it in Mechanical Engineering. Even back then, he was all about tech and making cool shit happen. He started Pitt Hydroponics there, basically, he founded a whole student group focused on hydroponics and community outreach. That shows you right away, this guy’s got that entrepreneurial fire, always looking to innovate and bring people together.
Fast forward, he worked at FOX IV Technologies as a Mechanical Engineer. Nothing fancy, just designing custom end effectors, motorized stands, macro label sensors, solid engineering work. But that’s just a warm-up. He’s more into the big picture.

Talk to herIn 2017, he co-founded Four Growers. This isn’t just some startup, it’s a robotics and analytics company changing how we do greenhouse farming. Think about that, automation for agriculture. It’s smart, sustainable, and insanely needed. Dan’s been the guy building all the tech, the business plan, the sales channels, the network. Basically, he’s the glue that kept everything together while hustling to make this thing work.
And get this, they got into Y Combinator in summer 2018. That’s the big leagues, right? Shows how much possible people saw in him and his team. He’s not just messing around; he’s jumping into the deep end with the best.
What does his process tell you? It’s about relentless passion for building stuff that actually matters. From student projects to modern agri-robots, Dan’s all about solving real problems with tech. He’s not just in it for the fame, he genuinely wants to feed the world, make farming smarter, more fast. And he’s done all of this while wearing multiple hats, engineering, business, hiring, strategy. That’s the kind of founder who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and actually build the future.
Bottom line? Dan Chi is a guy who saw a problem, jumped into it, and just kept pushing. He’s proof that if you combine technical skills with hustle and vision, you can really make an impact. No Cap, the guy’s a future leader in AgTech, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s changing the game even more in the next few years.
