What's up with Robert DiFazio

Check it out, we’re talking about Robert DiFazio. This guy’s the real deal in biotech startup land. He’s a YC S21 alum, which already says a lot, he’s legit, super sharp, and crushing it. But what’s crazy is his process. Started out with a solid science background, PhD in Immunology from Pittsburgh, did postdoc at Stanford in Systems Immunology, and a B.S. in Chem & Cell Bio from Illinois. Dude’s been deep in the science trenches forever.

He used that knowledge to jump into the world of big research, working at Stanford as Director of Strategy & Research Development. There, he managed a $100 million portfolio and led some big R&D projects. Basically, he saw how the sausage is made in big science and realized there’s gotta be a better way, especially when it comes to drug discovery, which is full of bullshit animal models that just don’t cut it.

Then, during the pandemic, he co-founded Parallel Bio with Juliana Hilliard. They saw the problem, traditional preclinical testing sucks and is super slow, super expensive, and often just not predictive. So they decided to use human immune organoids + AI to make drug discovery way more accurate and faster. Think about it, instead of animal testing, they’re putting human immune systems in a dish and leveraging AI to see what really works. That’s some advanced shit.

And it’s working. They’ve raised over $21 million in Series A, no cap, and are partnering up to push organoid-based drugs into clinical trials. They’re aiming to cut down the costs and time it takes to get new meds to patients by billions and years. That’s huge.

What does this all say about Robert? The guy’s driven by a deep desire to solve real problems, not just chase fame or money. His background in immunology, big research, and then jumping straight into startup mode shows he’s all about making a tangible impact. He’s not just tinkering around; he’s trying to basically change the game in drug discovery and disease modeling.

He’s the kind of founder who’s not afraid to jump into the deep end, challenge the status quo, and build something that actually matters. He’s got the science chops, the vision, and the hustle. And honestly, he’s the type of person who, once he’s on something, he crushes it, pushing biotech forward with a mix of brains and guts. That’s why he’s a big deal, and why Parallel Bio might just change how we fight disease forever.
